Masters in Genetics Engineering

Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification, is the direct human manipulation of an organism's genome using modern DNA technology. It involves the introduction of foreign DNA or synthetic genes into the organism of interest. The introduction of new DNA does not require the use of classical genetic methods, however traditional breeding methods are typically used for the propagation of recombinant organisms.

Genetic Engineering (GE) is a highly complicated and advanced branch of science which involves a wide range of techniques used in changing the genetic material in the DNA code in a living organism. 'Genetic Engineering' means the deliberate modification of the characters of an organism by the manipulation of its genetic material. Genetic engineering comes under the broad heading of Biotechnology. There is a great scope in this field as the demand for genetic engineers are growing in India as well as abroad.A cell is the smallest living unit, the basic structural and functional unit of all living matter, whether a plant, an animal, humans or a fungus. While some organisms are single celled, others like plants, animals, humans etc are made up of a lot more cells. For eg humans have approximately 3 million cells. A cell is composed of a 'cell membrane' enclosing the whole cell, many 'organelles' equivalent to the organs in the body and a 'nucleus' which is the command centre of the cell. Inside the nucleus are the chromosomes which is the storage place for all genetic (hereditary) information which determines the nature and characteristics of an organism. This information is written along the thin thread, called DNA, a nucleic acid which constitutes the genes (units of heredity). The DNA governs cell growth and is responsible for the transmission of genetic information from one generation to the next.

Genetic engineering aims to re-arrange the sequence of DNA in gene using artificial methods. The work of a genetic engineer involves extracting the DNA out of one organism, changing it using chemicals or radiation and subsequently putting it back into the same or a different organism. For eg: genes and segments of DNA from one species is taken and put into another species. They also study how traits and characteristics are transmitted through the generations, and how genetic disorders are caused. Their research involves researching the causes and discovering potential cures if any.

Genetic engineering have specialisations related to plants, animals and human beings. Genetic engineering in plants and animals may be to improve certain natural characteristics of value, to increase resistance to disease or damage and to develop new characteristics etc. It is used to change the colour, size, texture etc of plants otherwise known as GM (Genetically Modified) foods. GE in humans can be to correct severe hereditary defects by introducing normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones.

Eligibility & Course Areas

Educational: A qualified genetic engineer, must have a graduate / postgraduate degree in genetics or related fields such as biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology or biochemistry OR a doctorate (PhD) from a recognised university, based on 2-3 years of his own research under the guidance of a professor/lecturer.

The basic eligibility criteria for a graduate degree (BE / B.Tech) is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as genetics as part of the biology OR a bachelors degree in science or molecular biology.

Most institutes do not offer courses in Genetic Engineering as a special discipline but as a subsidiary in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry streams. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biotechnology offer specialisation in genetic engineering.

Selection to the graduate courses ( BE / B.Tech ) is based on merit i.e the marks secured in the final exams of 10+2 and through entrance exams. Entrance to the IIT's is through JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) and for other institutions through  their own separate entrance exams and other state level and national level exams. Apart from the IIT's,  some other famous institutes also recognize JEE scores for selection. Selection to the postgraduate courses ( M.Sc / M.Tech) in different universities is through an All India Combined Entrance exam conducted by JNU, New Delhi and to IIT's through GATE in Two year/ 4 semester M.Tech courses and through JEE in five year integrated M.Tech courses in Biochemical engineering and Biotechnology.

Personal Attributes: To be a successful genetic engineer, one must have sharp analytical mind, an aptitude for research, high levels of concentration, eye for details, lively imagination, abundant physical stamina to put in long hours of work, ability to work as a team, moreover he should have a sound moral sense.

Job Prospects & Career Options

There is an increasing demand for genetic engineers in India as well as abroad. Genetic engineers are mainly absorbed in medical and pharmaceutical industries, the agricultural sector, and the research and development departments of the government and private sectors. They can also take up teaching as an option.
Genetic engineering involves developing hybrid varieties of plants, making a plant disease resistant by transferring genes from a plant that already has the characteristic, introducing Genetically Modified foods by changing the colour, size, texture of the produce of plants such as fruits and vegetables. GE in humans can be to correct severe hereditary defects by introducing normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones.

A team headed by Ian Wilmut and his colleagues at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland made history when they produced a lamp named Dolly, an exact genetic copy or clone of a sheep. This landmark discovery of the regeneration of an exact replica of a whole animal by transferring nuclei from the cells of that animal to unfertilized eggs of another animal, without the help of a male counterpart, has given researches a wide area open to be discovered. With this discovery, genetic engineering has become globally recognized.

German Universities

Most universities do not offer courses in Genetic Engineering as a special discipline but you can study it as a subsidiary in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry streams.

MSc in Molecular Biology

Molecular biology  is the branch of biology that deals with the molecular basis of biological activity. This field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry. Molecular biology chiefly concerns itself with understanding and the interactions between the various systems of a cell, including the interactions between the different types of DNA, RNA and protein biosynthesis as well as learning how these interactions are regulated.

Writing in Nature in 1961, William Astbury described molecular biology as not so much a technique as an approach, an approach from the viewpoint of the so-called basic sciences with the leading idea of searching below the large-scale manifestations of classical biology for the corresponding molecular plan. It is concerned particularly with the forms of biological molecules and is predominantly three-dimensional and structural—which does not mean, however, that it is merely a refinement of morphology. It must at the same time inquire into genesis and function.

In  Germany, the Universities offering Molecular Biology Major has been designed for three groups of students: (a) those who plan to enter a research career in molecular biology or related areas such as biochemistry, genetics, oncology, microbiology, cell biology or developmental biology; (b) pre-professional students who plan to enter either a research or clinical career in medicine or allied health fields; and (c) students who plan to teach secondary-school science. Students with other interests are also welcome, of course.

The academic programs include instruction on the molecular basis of gene regulation in microbial and animal cells, the biological features of different types of micro-organisms, the molecular basis for animal development, the structure of animal cells and the functions of their internal organelles, the molecular basis for cancer and other diseases, the interaction of animal cells with micro-organisms and viruses, and the application of recombinant DNA techniques to problems in basic science and biotechnology.

Career Prospects

Since Molecular Biology is a rare field of Science, hence competition is expected to be less as compared to other fields of basic and applied sciences. However, the career is challenging and rewarding. Those who have sufficient interests and relevant academic qualification can only make a career in Molecular Biology.

Molecular and Cell Biologists find employment opportunities in research labs established by Government of India or in the R&D departments of various private drug companies. They can work on developing therapeutic drugs to working on stem cell research and in many other areas within the medical development field. A molecular and cell biologist may find themselves working on research that involves cloning, sub cloning, synthetic RNA transcription, gene expression, cell growth and development, cell and organelle structure and assembly, and DNA dynamics and chromosome structure, and other types of laboratory work. Recording and analyzing various types of data are important parts of working as a molecular and cell biologist. Proper application of research to solve health problems and cure diseases will also be an option for molecular and cell biologists.

Pay-Package

The salary of Molecular Biologists is satisfying both in government and private sectors. However, private companies working on research and development (R&D) for drug development offer more salaries and benefits to the professionals. The average monthly salary varies between Rs 15, 000- Rs 30, 000.

MSc in Bioinformatics in Germany

What Is Bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics  is the application of statistics and computer science to the field of molecular biology.

The primary goal of bioinformatics is to increase the understanding of biological processes. What sets it apart from other approaches, however, is its focus on developing and applying computationally intensive techniques (e.g., pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning algorithms, and visualization) to achieve this goal.
The term bioinformatics was coined by Paulien Hogeweg and Ben Hesper in 1978 for the study of informatic processes in biotic systems. Its primary use since at least the late 1980s has been in genomics and genetics, particularly in those areas of genomics involving large-scale DNA sequencing.

Bioinformatics now entails the creation and advancement of databases, algorithms, computational and statistical techniques and theory to solve formal and practical problems arising from the management and analysis of biological data.

Why Is Bioinformatics So Important?

Although a human disease may not be found in exactly the same form in animals, there may be sufficient data for an animal model that allow researchers to make inferences about the process in humans.
The rationale for applying computational approaches to facilitate the understanding of various biological processes includes:
  • a more global perspective in experimental design
  • the ability to capitalize on the emerging technology of database-mining - the process by which testable hypotheses are generated regarding the function or structure of a gene or protein of interest by identifying similar sequences in better characterized organisms

Universities' Mission

Career Oppurtunities

Over the past few decades rapid developments in genomic and other molecular research technologies and developments in information technologies have combined to produce a tremendous amount of information related to molecular biology. It is the name given to these mathematical and computing approaches used to glean understanding of biological processes.
Common activities in bioinformatics include mapping and analyzing DNA and protein sequences, aligning different DNA and protein sequences to compare them and creating and viewing 3-D models of protein structures.

The rapidly emerging field of bioinformatics promises to lead to advances in understanding basic biological processes and, in turn, advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of many genetic diseases. Bioinformatics has transformed the discipline of biology from a purely lab-based science to an information science as well. Increasingly, biological studies begin with a scientist conducting vast numbers of database and Web site searches to formulate specific hypotheses or to design large-scale experiments. The implications behind this change, for both science and medicine, are staggering.

Study Masters in Biotechnology in Germany for less than 3 Lakhs

The German biotechnology sector is growing. Altogether, around 27,000 people have jobs in the field of biotechnology. Biotechnology has become the basis and driving factor behind many applications in medicine, the food and feed industry and chemical industry. It is, for example, used in the production of medical drugs, for new diagnosis and therapy concepts, the production of fine chemicals, wastewater treatment processes or energy production from biomass. Different fields of application have different colours.

White or industrial biotechnology deals with the production of chemical base materials and end products. Biotechnology processes in medical applications, such as the development of new medical drugs, are called red biotechnology.

Green or plant biotechnology is used to produce plants that are better nutrient producers or renewable resources. Black biotechnology is already being discussed. It uses microorganisms as energy suppliers. Black symbolizes the still predominant energy sources of oil and coal.

The Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) established a specific funding framework for biotechnological research in Germany. At present, there are 25 different ongoing initiatives to financially support universities, research institutes, companies or individual researchers by specific measures. They target all players in the innovation value chain - from basic and applied research and clinics to start ups and companies. Furthermore, the BMBF guarantees institutional funding for the four research societies Max-Planck-Society,  Leibniz Association, Helmholtz Association and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, in which a wide range of researchers are working in biotechnology research.

Biotechnology in Germany - the future on your doorstep

Whether it is health and nutrition, agriculture or production and environmental protection - biotechnology has already established itself in the central areas of our lives. This success, but also the numerous still unsolved problems and the promising solution approaches motivate scientists and entrepreneurs to develop new products and procedures. Bearing in mind the increasingly intensifying international competition, innovative ability is of great significance for research and economy in Germany: for improving and securing of service standards and the work place. In this way biotechnology in Germany stands for a piece of the future on your doorstep.
In the last decade - particularly from 1997 to 2001 – the number of biotechnological companies in Germany has increased dramatically, which is to be attributed among other things to the BioRegio competition started by the BMBF in 1995. This could contribute to the fact that regional concentrations of biotechnological companies have been established, so called biotechnology clusters. Three of the four largest are in the winner regions of the competition: Munich, Rhine-Neckar and Rhineland. A further biotechnological network does research and works in the Berlin - Brandenburg area. Throughout Germany there are currently 25  biotechnology regions with around 600 mostly young companies, 360 of them in the biomedical sector. Therefore Germany is in the vanguard of Europe.

In total, together with the biotechnological sectors of other companies they employ around 30,000 employees, almost half of them with university education. A look at the fields of activity of the biotechnology companies shows the significance of innovative ability and development in this sector: 85% carry out their own research, 64% provide services, 63% carry out product and process development, 45% are in production. In 2006 these companies with their core business in biotechnology earned almost 1.8 billion Euros in Germany.

A close link between biotechnological research and scientific implementation is crucial for commercial and scientific success. Accordingly, biotechnology clusters have emerged in regions with a high level of universities, universities of applied sciences and public research institutions - ideal conditions for intensive networking between science and economy.
